The Sacred Breath: Finding Stillness on the Summer Solstice
Today, June 21, 2023, marks a beautiful convergence. While the world gathers to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, we find ourselves standing in the peak of the Sun’s power—the Summer Solstice.
For the practitioner, these two observances are not separate. Yoga, at its core, is the union of the self with the divine, and the Solstice is the ultimate celebration of that divine light reaching its zenith within us.
Stretching Toward the Sun
Yoga is more than the shapes we make with our bodies on a mat; it is the art of moving energy. Just as we tend to our gardens during the long days of June, we must tend to the “inner garden” of our spirits.
Today, consider incorporating these small, intentional acts into your practice:
- Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar): Dedicate each movement to the returning light. As you reach toward the sky, visualize yourself soaking up the solar energy to sustain you through the coming darker months.
- Rooting Down: While we reach for the sun, we must honor the Earth. Find a patch of grass, kick off your shoes, and ground your bare feet into the soil. Feel the connection between your pulse and the rhythm of the planet.
- Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati): Harness the element of Fire. Use this breathwork to burn away stagnant energy and “mom fog,” clearing the space for clarity and renewed purpose.
The Witch’s Asana
When we practice with intention, every posture becomes a spell. A “Warrior” pose is an act of grounding and protection; a “Child’s Pose” is a surrender to the Earth Mother; a “Tree Pose” is a reminder of our own resilience and connection to the forest.
Today, don’t just exercise. Ritualize. Let your breath be your incantation and your movement be your magic. Find the stillness in the center of the longest day, and hold it there.
Happy Summer Solstice, and may your practice bring you the peace you seek.
