The Seven of Wands symbolises courage in the face of opposition, the need to stand your ground and have the courage of your convictions. Following the success of the Six, new challenges appear. In most versions of this card, the figure holds the high ground, symbolising the solid and positive position brought by pas efforts and successes. However, the figure is usually also beset from all sides and may be outnumbered. When this card comes up, you may need to look at where you are on the defensive and where you have the strength to stand and fight. There may be a change you are resisting and sometimes letting go of the resistance is all that’s needed to remove the obstacles to your progress. You may be called on to act with the courage of your convictions, and also to evaluate your priorities.
Reflection in Upright:
Our values form a core part of our identity; when they are attacked, it can feel deeply personal. When was the last time you voiced a deeply held principle, only to be criticized for it? How did you react? Does defending your actions, beliefs, and values fire you up or wear you out? Did you successfully hold your ground and was worth it?
Action in Upright:
Take the long view This is going to be an endurance test, so conserve your energy and do what you need to do in order to protect yourself, but do it wisley.
Stand for something. When you act with conviction and fight for a cause greater than yourself, it can be the fuel you need to keep going.
Be prepared and alert You stand a better chance of making it through the gauntlet, if you know what you’re signing up for. Face your challenges with knowledge of what to expect, and success will be more likely.
Reflection in Reverse:
Have you ever felt like the world was against you? Do you feel attacked by well-meaning family members or colleagues who judge your choices? Have you felt others were out to get you only to discover that it was a misunderstanding? Does feeling victimized stem from past wounds? How can you clear up the communication?
Action in Reverse:
List your burdens Knowing what or who you feel attacked and seeing that the list is infinite can help you get a better grasp of reality. It can also guide you towards dealing with issues, one at a time.
Remain objective When you’re defensive or negative, it’s hard to view things realistically. The way that we see the world is a reflection of our inner world, and now both may be filled with conflict and stress. Examine what your inner world reflects right now and how this is impacting the situation. Try to step away and examine the issues more objectively.
Journal Prompt: How are you adapting to changing circumstances, and where are you unwilling to comprisie on your vision? How is your work distinctive, and how does that give you courage and confidence to keep moving forward? Are there places that you can collaborate, or are you determined to go it alone at any cost?
