~May 9
Let there always be a sky.
Let there always be a sun.
Let there always be my mother.
Let there always be our love.
Thank you, mother, for your arms.
Thank you, mother, for your legs.
Thank you, mother, for your mind.
Thank you, mother, for your love.
-Russian and Lithuanian folksongs
Whether a woman becomes a mother during her lifetime or not, she is the daughter of a mother. The same is true of men, who are all children of their mothers. The connection between mother and child is deep and important. Even when children are estranged from their mothers, or mothers from children, that bond is there. It is a bond like that of lovers, for in love, as in pregnancy and birth, bodies connect in the most intimate fashion.
Like our individual mothers, the great mother of earth is connected with us at every moment. We may forget this connection, but we are never forgotten. Air is replenished by the plants around us. The waters purify themselves through clouds and rain and rivers, so that when we drink, we take that great circle dance within us. We are fed and clothed by her bounty. In this mothering season, let us offer praise and thanks to our greatest mother, this green and fertile planet.
