Above all else, have faith.
My commands are not difficult to obey.
At this very moment, as I speak to you,
I speak to everyone else as well. I give them
commands to help you in your quest.
I give them commands to make way for you.
Only remember me. Keep my words locked
fiercely in your heart. From this day forward
you are mine. Every moment of your life
is dedicated to my service. From this day forward
I will assist you every moment, while you worship me.
—Speech of the goddess Isis,
in Apuleius The Golden Ass
To rebuild our faith in the universe again after difficult times have passed is not an easy task. Tragedy and trauma shake our confidence in our world. Will we ever be truly happy again? Will we ever be truly cared for? In the great ancient comedy by the North African writer Apuleius, the goddess appears at just the point when all seems lost. The hero is about to be put to death. What more dreadful threat could the future hold?
Yet it is just at that moment the goddess reveals herself. Believe in my power, she says, and all will be well. It is difficult to accept such a promise, when times are hard. Yet hope demands that we do so. Life continues, with all its golden promise. We need only believe.
