Stretch out your tent. Pull out the curtains of the entry
to form a welcoming pavilion. Make strong the stakes
and test the tautness of the cords. For your lover approaches.
Tonight, you too will be spread open in welcome love.
Fear not, for love extends across the years and the nations.
Fear not, for your lover is passionate and compassionate,
your lover brings the spirit into your life.
-Isaiah 54:2-7
In mystical literature, the spirit’s highest self often appears as the lover, the beloved one of the heart. Sometimes this lover appears as a god, but sometimes there is no apparent divinity, just the beauty of human love.
What is the mystery this language embodies? That the soul becomes one with itself in the great transformation that is life. As we move through our life’s seasons, we meet and marry our inner opposites. We who are outwardly oriented in our youth become more withdrawn as we mature; those for whom the inner life is more important are drawn to the outer world. The talkative grow more silent, the silent more loquacious. Spiritual literature encourages us to embrace our opposites, to love them passionately and compassionately, for they are what move us toward wholeness.
