A detailed woven tapestry hanging on a stone wall, illustrating a central glowing female figure of Wisdom connected by golden, leafy vines to five distinct landscapes featuring a coastal cedar, a mountain cypress, desert date-palms, a rose bush by city walls, and a valley olive grove.
One Wisdom, Enlivening All” — A visual representation of the adaptive and nurturing nature of Wisdom as described in the Book of Sirach.

~June 14

I am a cedar by the ocean,
a cypress on the mountainside,
a date-palm in the desert.
I am the rose within the city walls,
in the valley I grow like an olive.
And everywhere I put forth green
shoots like the vine, and everywhere
my harvest is honor and wealth.
-Sirach 24:12-14, 16-17

In the Hebraic scriptures—the Bible—Wisdom speaks as a woman. In this famous passage, she compares herself to the various trees of the land. Just as they are adapted to their specific environment, so does Wisdom adapt our minds to the setting in which we find ourselves. We need a different kind of wisdom to sustain a friendship than we do to build a career; we experience wisdom differently when we must be clever than when we can be kind.

There many be many trees, but there is only one energy enlivening them all. Similarly, there is one Wisdom showing us the way to balance the needs of others and our own, showing us how to be both firm and loving, revealing the way to be both happy and successful. Listen to Wisdom, and she will lead you to yourself.
