Moonzie Momma

A Sumerian-style illustration showing the goddess Inanna rising from a dark underworld into a bright landscape where people are planting seeds under a sun and crescent moon.
“To you, Inanna, we sing!” — Celebrating the return of light and the season of planting.

~April 17

At dawn, you brighten the day.
At evening, you are radiant.
At noon, you stand majestic,
and strong, and brilliant.
You are more lovely
than the sun and moon
shining in the sky together.
You are the priestess of heaven,
whose wonders are sung
by those above and those below.
To you, Inanna, we sing!
—Sumerian song to the goddess

In the mythology of the eastern Mediterranean, the goddess Inanna descends to the underworld, where she endures many losses and finally dies, hung on a meat hook in the palace of Erishkigel, goddess of death.

But Inanna is rescued from the realm of death by faithful servants who lead her forth into the dazzling light of the upper world. And so it is with us each year, when we reembody the passage of the divine woman through the dark times of winter and back into the light. As we reemerge, feeling again the blood coursing through our veins, we feel as though we are born again to life and to our senses.

This is the time for planting, deeply and tenderly, all that we wish to flower in the coming seasons of our lives. In gratitude for our survival through one more winter season, we plant our hopes and dreams.
