Aphelion (Earth farthest from Sun for the year)
Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 3:06 pm
Aphelion refers to the point in an object’s orbit around the Sun when it is farthest from the Sun. In our solar system, the Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle but rather an elliptical shape, with the Sun at one of the foci. As a result, the distance between the Earth and the Sun varies throughout the year.
The point in Earth’s orbit where it is closest to the Sun is called perihelion, while the point farthest from the Sun is called aphelion. The difference in distance between perihelion and aphelion is relatively small, about 3 million miles or 5 million kilometers.
The Earth reaches aphelion around July 4th of each year. At aphelion, the Earth receives slightly less solar energy compared to perihelion, but this variation in distance has a minimal effect on Earth’s seasons. Other planets in our solar system also have aphelion points in their orbits, and they experience similar variations in distance from the Sun.
