A Magical Cemetery Walk

Kate Freuler

While cemeteries are often the setting for spooky stories and zombie movies, realistically I think most people find them to be peaceful, pleasant places. In my community, it’s common for folks to take their daily walk in the graveyard purely for the quiet. But there are some people who visit because they like the feeling of being near those who have passed. There is no way to deny that upon entering a graveyard, there is a change in the energy around you, and your mind tends to meander down a different path than usual. This could be chalked up to several things: the subject of death in general, the presence of spirits, or even just the culmination of lore surrounding these sacred places.

It’s interesting to note that while I, and many others, use the words graveyard and cemetery interchangeably, graveyard actually implies a site that is attached to a church or place of worship, whereas a cemetery is independent and considered nondenominational. This difference might impact the feel of the place, as those who are buried in a churchyard are more likely to have believed in a specific religion and its values.

For me, graveyards and cemeteries are magical. When I enter a cemetery, I experience a shift in consciousness. It’s like I’ve walked into a bubble and am separated from the humdrum of mundane life. The breeze carries the voices of spirits. The earth under my feet holds the ongoing cycle of decay and rebirth. The grave markers, shaped by weather and time, each seem to have a personality of their own. I begin to think about bigger things, like life’s purpose, the afterlife, and the invisible powers at play. It can put things in perspective. For many spiritual people, graveyards and magic go hand in hand, since some spells and rituals involve the spirits of the dead. Items collected from graveyards, such as dirt and pebbles, have special significance in magic. Due to the ethereal energy of the place and the closeness of the spirit realm, these simple materials are actually tools more powerful than the prettiest of purchased items.

It’s extremely important, however, to be sure not to disturb any existing plots, decorations, tombstones, flowers, or statues. To do so is illegal in many places and considered vandalism, not to mention disrespectful. Please never take a piece of a tombstone or other monument, even if it is crumbling or damaged, as this is still vandalism.

There are a few reasons why cemeteries are so special. One is that it is a liminal space. “Liminal” refers to a threshold between two states of being, a seemingly empty space that is simultaneously nothing and everything. Liminality occurs between endings and beginnings. Where there is emptiness, there is potential. Physically speaking, consider how those who have been buried are transitioning between forms; their physical remains are turning into fertile earth that will nourish new growth. This is a corporeal display of the constant change that generates life. The grass, trees, and flowers serve as reminders that from death springs birth and from endings grow beginnings. In terms of the spirit, it is the place hovering between this life and the next. As an earthly life concludes, the spirit continues into the unknown. Liminal spaces are a gateway where anything can happen.

Another magical element of graveyards is of course the spirits of the dead, who, depending on your intention, can be communicated with or involved in rituals. Contrary to popular belief, spirit contact in a cemetery is usually a subtle, calm experience. For those who are working on strengthening their skills in spirit communication, it’s a good place to begin.

Last, there is a very special atmosphere in the graveyard that can’t be found anywhere else. While it’s difficult to define this feeling, the fact that it exists makes for powerful magic. Mood, emotion, and atmosphere all contribute to successful rituals. Even if you choose not to work directly with spirits, it’s beneficial to your magical practice to at least have a relationship with the concept of death and its vital role in the cycle of existence.

Making It Magical

Doing magic in a cemetery doesn’t have to be a large-scale affair with pomp and ceremony (in fact, this could attract unwanted attention from people who might not understand your practice). Often, it’s a quiet, thoughtful event or a subtle experience with big meaning. Sometimes nothing at all unusual will occur on your walk beyond enjoying the experience, while other times you might feel a distinct poke in the ribs from spirits who want to tell you something. Magical things can happen any time, so you may as well be prepared. The following are some ways to turn an ordinary walk in the cemetery into something more meaningful:

  • Remember that respect is important to the land, the spirits, and other people. If you see a funeral or mourners, give them plenty of space. Leave everything exactly as you found it, and, again, don’t touch offerings or flowers left by others or in any way disturb a grave. If you plan to work with spirits, do so with gentleness rather than commands.
  • When embarking on a cemetery walk, bring a biodegradable offering just in case you need it. This can be a crystal, some dried herbs, or any small thing with personal or magical meaning. An offering is required to express thanks to the spirits when you take any items, such as pebbles or twigs, from the cemetery. Remember not to take anything that is noticeable or causes a disturbance.
  • Visit the same graveyard often to create familiarity. Much like the living, the dead are more likely to aid you if they know and like you! Think of it this way: Imagine you start going to a coffee shop at the same time each morning. At first, you don’t think much of the other people in the shop, as they are merely strangers passing by. However, over time, you will notice that you see the same people every day. Soon you start to nod hello or exchange words. Eventually, a familiarity develops, and you might even get to know each other. Getting to know spirits can similarly take time and repeated exposure.
  • When doing rituals or spells, bring along a protection charm. While you’ll find that cemeteries are mostly calm, positive places, there is always the possibility of an unwanted spirit hanging around. You may already have a protection charm of your own, but if not, consider carrying a small amount of salt or a sprig of rosemary. You could also dab some protective essential oil (like frankincense) on your skin prior to your walk.
  • Consider the religious elements, if any. If the graveyard is associated with a specific set of beliefs, there’s a good chance the spirits there will reflect those values. If possible, learn a little bit about the religion in question to better understand your experiences there. The magic you’re working needs to be compatible with the spirits of the place.
  • The ability to sense spirits can take practice, especially when it comes to differentiating between imagination and reality. There will be times that you visit a cemetery and don’t feel anything meaningful at all, and that’s okay. Not everything is an omen or a message, and not every day will contain a spiritual epiphany.

Walking among the Dead

During your stroll, walk comfortably and don’t overthink it. Bring your mind into the now. Open up your senses and acknowledge what’s there. Be aware of sounds, scents, and what stands out visually. Feel the air on your skin and the dense earth under your shoes. Are there birds or little critters around, and if so, how are they behaving? If your mind wanders, just gently bring it back to your body and senses. By focusing on your physical self, you will slow down the noise in your brain, allowing for receptivity.

Without judgment or force, notice if anything particularly stands out to you, like a specific gravestone, a tree, or maybe even a bench beckoning you to sit down. Follow your gut and let your senses guide you. If a squirrel leads you in a certain direction, go ahead and follow it. If you sit on the bench, look around and pay attention. This is where meaning can be found. It might be something as simple as a ray of sunshine that makes you feel warm and peaceful, or a snippet of overheard conversation with words that apply to your situation. It’s these little things that carry messages for you. If you don’t feel much of anything at first, just let it go and try again next time. Attempting to strain meaning out of things that aren’t relevant is a tiring exercise in futility. If there is a message meant for you, you will know it.

A Little Bit of Magic

THE IMAGE OF AN ANCHOR CARVED INTO A TOMBSTONE REPRESENTS HOPE AND ETERNAL LIFE.

This receptive, open state is good for magical purposes and also just for simple stress relief. Once you’re comfortable walking around the graveyard in this fashion, you can try doing some magic!

Graveyard Divination

This working involves walking in a cemetery while seeking information on a specific issue. Be sure to bring an offering with you as described earlier. This spell is good for when you’re wavering over a tough decision or in a situation where you are not being shown the whole truth.

At the entrance to the cemetery, take a moment to whisper your question or concern. Then enter the graveyard and commence walking as described. In your mind, you can explain your concerns to the spirits further as if talking to a friend. (If you do this out loud, you might get some odd glances, but that’s up to you!) Maintain your mental presence and just wander. Be aware of any small natural objects that grab your attention or stand out. In keeping with being respectful and minding the law, look for something general that won’t disturb any plots, such as a rock, a pine cone, tree bark, a small twig, or even a pinch of dirt. Pick up the object to take it with you, leaving your offering in its place. Mentally or with words, give a sincere thank-you to the spirits who have been listening.

Take the item home and place it in a relevant area. For example, if your issue was relationships, put it in the place where you spend the most time with your partner. For business, put it on your desk, and so on. If it’s small enough, you can carry it with you in your pocket as you go about your life. Gently handle the item at least once a day to acknowledge the helpful spirit within it. Be patient, and you will get your answer or resolution as the spirit sees fit. The answer can come at any time, through any source. It might be a mundane occurrence that reveals the information you need in a seemingly very ordinary way or something more mystical, like a dream or vision. Afterward, return the item to the cemetery if possible.

Peaceful Spirit Spell

This spell draws upon the peaceful energy of the cemetery. Only do this spell in a graveyard where you genuinely feel positive vibes. You will need a jar with a lid and an offering.

Find a secluded spot in the cemetery and open the jar. Quiet your thoughts and achieve a mindful state. Be aware of the calm, restful mood of the cemetery. This energy permeates everything in the area. Visualize it as a thin white fog slowly swirling among the trees, lingering over the grass, and caressing the tombstones. It softly covers your skin and mingles with your energy field. This benevolent energy contains peace, mystical knowledge, and the loving guidance of the dead. It holds the comforting surrender of death alongside the rich energy of rebirth. Imagine the jar filling up with this white swirling mist. If you like, you can make the simple statement provided below to the spirits, or if you like something fancier, you can write your own.

Benevolent spirits, I ask for your aid in bringing peace, rest, and healing into my home.

Put the lid on the jar. Leave your offering. Take the jar home, open il, and let the peaceful energy of the cemetery drift out of the jar. Imagine it dispersing into the air and bringing its essence to all it touches.

You can tweak this spell for other purposes by asking the spirits to assist you with bringing love or prosperity into your home.

Regardless of whether or not you include cemeteries in your magic, spending time there is a good way to ease stress, get some exercise, and give your day a special little spark of mysticism.
