The Hanged One is a mysterious figure, unsettling to some as he appears to be in an uncomfortable position. HOwever, in most of the images of this card, he looks peaceful and even happy. The Hanged One is a paradox, for he teaches us sometimes, the best way to succeed to to stoy trying. After turning inward of the last few cards and the uncomfortable truths that we may be discoerving about ourselves, the Hanged One brings a period of peace. We need to suspend our actions for a while, reverse our perspective and surrender to what comes. This is a card of knowing when the time is right, and not doing anything until that time. The power of a Hanged One lies in his stillness, his openness to a new way of being, and his ability simply to wait for the right time. He teaches us to re-frame our experience, to see the positive in a challenging situation or the reality of an illusion. He can also show us our place in the bigger picture, allowing us to see beyond our individual concerns and connect to something greater than ourselves. This new perspective can allow us to sacrifice some of those individual concerns, especially those which are proving to be meaningless and make space for a clearer sense of who we really are. The Hanged One can bring a kind of independence of thinking, an ability to release our social conditioning and follow the path of our hearts.

Reversed or shadow aspects of this card include holding onto a way of being which no longer serves us or refusing to consider change. We may not be willing to make the necessary sacrifices which will allow us to move forward, or we may sacrifice too much of ourselves or take a victim mentality.

When he comes up in a reading, the Hanged One tends to indicate a time when trying or taking conscious action to change our situation will not help. We need to release, to let go of our urg to control and allow events to unfold as they will. This is a card of patience and stillness, of allowing ourselves simply to be.

Reflection in Upright:

Although you have clear career goals, you realize you must take two steps backward to correct your course. What are you sacrificing? How does seeing the bigger picture shift your viewpoint of that you are giving up? The Hanged One also represents the wisdom to know that when the time is right for something to happen, it will.

Action in Upright:

Bide your time Sometimes waiting for the right moment is the best course of action. When the timing is right, events will unfold.

Think of the larger goal Focus on the bigger picture and the little sacrifices that you make to get there don’t see so bad.

Known what you can’t control Achieving certain goals will depend on other people or external circumstances, which are beyond your control. Try to focus instead on what you have power over. Perhaps it’s time to look inward rather than outward.

Reflection in Reverse:

You may feel as though life is no longer on hold and you can continue along your path. What sacrifices did you have to make to reach this point? Was it worth it? On the other hand, are you frustrated by the lack of progress you’ve made in pursuit of your goals? Do the next steps depend on other people or external circumstances?

Action in Reverse:

Explore your new perspective Consider how your time in suspension changed the way you view the world. Embrace the new opportunities available to you now – perhaps they have always been there, but you just didn’t see them before.

Surrender If you’ve been struggling to accept the obstacles that are in your way, this card could be a sign that you have to let go sometimes. Accept things as they are.

Give your thinking mind a break Trying to force solutions doesn’t always work. when your mind is well-rested, answers may come.

Astrological correspondence: Neptune

Associated with fantasy, mystery, and psychic energy, Neptune rules the spiritual unknown, giving us space to explore depths and uncertainties with ease. In the same way, the Hanged One asks us to pause physical or intellectual movement and instead sit with our doubts, our fears, our lack of control. Both archetype and planet play with fantasy, inspiring a dreamy quality that can pull us out of our bodies and into the spirit realm. There can be much clarity in questions, in allowing ourselves to stop focusing on what is known and instead indulge in fantasy, wonder, uncertainty. And in being open to unexpected foresight, in letting ourselves drift into uncharted places, we can find new strength when we come back to the physical world.

Journal Prompt: Where does Neptune fall in your chart? In which house? In which sign? Think about how the energy of the Hanged One intersects with the energy of that Neptune placement and with Neptune’s energy in general. What does it mean to surrender to fantasy, to explore illusion, to be open to mystery? How does your Neptune placement help you understand this archetype?

Numerological correspondence: Twelve to Three

Twelve consolidates to three, and the Empress, a natural outpouring of creativity, desire, and connection. The Empress is an archetype tied to generosity, abundance and celebration of sharing our visions and ambitions of letting others see us. And in many ways, the Hanged One is the inverse internalizing new perspectives, the tension between action and stillness and inability to express what we need or pursue our desires.  If we can sink into surrender, there is much to be learned, many ways that we can grow. But if we struggle against that tension, if we refuse to recognize where we are in the cycle, it can cause pain, even damage. The Empress has to push ideas and resources out into the world, but the Hanged One must retain their observations and let their creativity flow inward. If the Empress is the movement that comes after a decision is made, the Hanged One demonstrates what happens after the intentional work and change brought by Justice.  Anytime we move in a particular direction, we are sacrificing other possibilities, giving up potential in one area so that we can pursue it in another. The Hanged One shows us what it can look like to wait for movement, to not know what is being unlocked but to trust that this expression is happening anyway.

Journal prompt The number three is one of creativity, expansion, and external movement – yet the Hanged One is a figure of motionless contemplation of patient waiting of stagnant energy.  What does it mean to focus Empress expression inwardly? How do observation, stillness, and patience help you nurture yourself? How does it feel to hold your movement back, either willingly or by force? When have you felt this sensation, and what did it offer you.
