A vibrant, multi-armed Hindu goddess, representing Shakti, sits in a meditative lotus position atop a pink lotus flower at the center of a cosmic and earthly landscape. Swirling galaxies fill the upper left sky, while a flowing river, lush forests, and mountains line the right. Streams of life, animals, humans, and Devnagari script emanate from her multiple hands, while a small figure of Lord Shiva rests in mid-air near her trident.
“If immensity had form, it would be mine.” An artistic rendering of Goddess Shakti as the primordial, active energy that animates the universe, sustains nature, and balances cosmic forces.

If immensity had form, it would be mine.

I am abundance, and as such I produce
everything in nature, even you.
I am the queen of wealth. I bestow all wisdom.
I come first in every ritual. I am everywhere.

I give you the food you eat, the water that you drink,
from me comes all you see, all that breathes,
from me comes every word you hear.
Those who do not honor me destroy themselves.

Study me. Listen respectfully to me.
I am all pleasure, all life, all knowledge.
-Goddess Shakti speaking, from
sacred texts of India

In Hindu religion, the masculine is considered the passive principle, while the feminine is seen as the active one. Shakti is that active principle, one who animates all gods and all the world. Sometimes she is linked to the god Shiva, but she is also described as the overarching feminine presence who invigorates all.

Our culture tends to define femininity as passive, masculinity as active. Yet the Hindu insight shows that there are other ways to describe the difference between these energies within us. Embracing our inner Shakti, the inner vigor of femininity, is a step on the road to eliminating false oppositions in our mind.
