Moonzie Momma

An oil painting in a dark wooden frame depicting the Virgin Mary in a rich blue robe adorned with gold embroidery, seated on a cloud as she is crowned Queen of Heaven by God the Father and Jesus Christ. Angels surround her holding banners with Catholic prayers, while on earth below, a diverse group of devoted people—including a knight, a mother with a child, and a scholar—kneel in prayer against a landscape of ancient ruins and a distant village.
A classical, Renaissance-style depiction of the Virgin Mary being crowned as Queen of Heaven, surrounded by celestial angels and earthly devotees.

~ May 31

The queen takes her place in heaven,
wearing gold of Ophir.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Hail, queen of mercy!
Protect us on earth, and receive us when we die.
Alleluia, alleluia.

O most worthy queen of the world,
O Mary ever virgin,
pray for our peace and for our salvation.
Alleluia, alleluia.
—Catholic prayers for the Feast of the
Queenship of the Virgin Mary

Today, the feast of the Queenship of Mary is celebrated in Catholic churches around the globe. The Mother of God is said to have been taken, body and soul, into heaven, where she rules like the great heavenly goddesses of old. She is powerful yet merciful, the one who listens to the needs of her many children on earth. She is a magnificent image of the kindly mother.

Although the goddess has been pushed out of most major religions, the human need to affirm the completeness of divinity has not been eliminated. And so powerful figures emerge who bear the majesty and dignity of the ancient goddesses. Theologians may deny her the name of goddess, but she serves the same purpose in our hearts: to embody the universal feminine power, to offer us a form in which to acknowledge-even to love—it.
