Wisdom of the Ancestors: Honoring Our LGBT Elders

May 16th marks Honor Our LGBT Elders Day, a moment to pause and recognize the pioneers who cleared the path we walk today. In any practice rooted in tradition and lineage, we understand that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before. Our community elders are the keepers of our history, the survivors of the storms, and the architects of the freedom we now cultivate.

The Living Lineage

Just as we look to the movements of the stars or the deep roots of ancient herbs to understand our place in the world, we must look to our elders to understand the magic of resilience. They lived through eras where being oneself was a revolutionary act.

Honoring them isn’t just about looking back; it’s about acknowledging the living archives of wisdom they carry. Whether it’s through storytelling, mentorship, or simply sharing space, connecting with an elder is a powerful way to ground our current activism in historical truth.

How to Celebrate and Honor

  • Listen to the Oral History: Reach out to an elder in your life or engage with organizations like SAGE. There is a specific kind of medicine found in hearing a firsthand account of history.
  • Support the Community: Many LGBT elders face unique challenges regarding isolation or healthcare. Consider donating your time or resources to local centers that provide elder-specific programming.
  • Create a Dedication: If you maintain a space for reflection or an altar, place a rainbow candle or a photograph of a queer icon who inspires you. Use this space to send gratitude to the “chosen ancestors” who fought for the rights we exercise today.

The flame of our community burns bright because it has been tended to for decades by those who refused to let it go out. Today, we offer our deepest respect to the elders who taught us how to be brave.

Stay enchanted,

Moonzie
