~May 3
We have been rambling through the night,
until the break of day;
and now we have come back again,
and bring this garland gay.
We bring this garland gay to you,
as at your door we stand;
it is a sprout well budded out,
from the touch of her sweet hand.
-Folksong from Berkshire, England
As the goddess of springtime moves across the land, she touches the plants and they spring into bud and blossom in response. Versions of this story appear in many lands, for the force of vegetative life is often seen as under the command of the earth goddess in her springtime aspect.
Similarly, there is that within each of us that buds and blossoms only when encouraged by a kindly word or a loving gesture. Independence of others is often held up as an ideal within our society, yet there are some parts of ourselvesof our souls—that reveal themselves only in the company of loved ones. Spring offers an opportunity to connect with others after winter’s withdrawal. Making time for such connection will nourish some special beauties in our lives.
