Moonzie Momma

A young woman with wavy dark hair wears an olive green crushed velvet wrap dress, silver layered crescent moon necklaces, and rings on most fingers. She is seated in a tufted cream armchair with her eyes closed, pressing both hands against a large heart-shaped piece of polished rose quartz resting on her chest. Her legs are covered by a soft gray blanket. She is positioned to the right of an ornate, antique wooden mantlepiece which serves as an altar. The mantle is densely decorated with bunches of dried lavender, purple sage, and white candle holders, including a large white pillar candle in the foreground inscribed with “SAAM” and “2026” surrounded by stars and crescent moons. Various amethyst and rose quartz crystals, a silver chalice, a smudging bowl with sage, a tarot deck, and an open notebook with a quill pen rest on the black altar cloth covered mantle. In the background, there is a window with a sheer white curtain showing a dark night sky with a large, bright crescent moon, and tall bookshelves filled with many books and more potted plants.

Merry meet, lovely souls, and welcome back to this sacred space. As we embrace the renewing energies of April and the burgeoning life all around us, it’s also a time for deep reflection and somber remembrance. This month, we stand in solidarity for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). It’s a time to acknowledge the darkness that exists in our world, but also to kindle the flames of hope, healing, and change.

For many of us who walk a witchy or pagan path, our connection to the Earth and its cycles is paramount. We draw strength from the changing seasons, the phases of the moon, and the inherent magic of the natural world. In this month of awareness, we can turn to these ancient traditions for guidance and solace.

The Power of the Goddess

In many pagan traditions, the Goddess is a powerful force of creation, destruction, and transformation. She is the mother who protects, the crone who holds wisdom, and the maiden who embodying new beginnings. When we confront the trauma of sexual assault, we can find solace in the Goddess’s embrace. We can invoke her strength and resilience, and ask for her guidance on the path to healing.

The Wisdom of the Moon

The moon, with its waxing and waning cycles, is a powerful symbol of emotional tides and intuition. It reminds us that change is inevitable, and that even in our darkest moments, there is always the potential for rebirth. During SAAM, we can connect with the moon’s energy to foster emotional awareness and release. We can create rituals to honor our own feelings, whatever they may be, and to find the strength to process them.

The Magic of Herbalism

Plants have been used for centuries for their healing properties, both physical and emotional. During SAAM, we can explore the power of herbalism to support our journey of healing. Herbs like chamomile, lavender, and valerian can help to soothe anxiety and promote relaxation. Others, like mugwort and St. John’s wort, can support emotional processing and release.

Creating Sacred Space

In the wake of trauma, creating a safe and sacred space is essential. This can be a physical space in your home, or a mental space you cultivate through meditation and visualization. Fill your space with objects that bring you comfort and peace, such as crystals, candles, and meaningful symbols. This can be a sanctuary where you can allow yourself to be vulnerable, to grieve, and to heal.

Community and Support

No one should have to walk the path of healing alone. During SAAM, reach out to others who understand. Find support groups, online communities, or trusted friends and family members who can offer a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Sharing your story can be incredibly healing, both for yourself and for others.

Action and Advocacy

Awareness is only the first step. To create lasting change, we must also take action. During SAAM, consider ways you can advocate for survivors and promote sexual assault prevention. You can donate to organizations that support survivors, volunteer your time, or speak out against sexual violence in your community.

A Ritual for Healing and Resilience

To honor SAAM and connect with the healing energies of the season, consider performing a simple ritual. You will need:

  • A candle (white for healing, or purple for spiritual wisdom)
  • A piece of paper and a pen
  • A bowl of water
  • A small piece of rose quartz or other healing crystal
  1. Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.
  2. Light your candle and take a few deep breaths.
  3. Write down any thoughts, feelings, or experiences related to sexual assault that you wish to release. Be honest and vulnerable.
  4. Carefully burn the piece of paper in the flame of the candle, visualizing your pain and trauma being transformed into smoke and light.
  5. Hold the rose quartz crystal to your heart and focus on its loving energy.
  6. Gently place the crystal in the bowl of water, symbolizing the washing away of old wounds and the purification of your spirit.
  7. Spend a few moments in meditation, visualizing yourself surrounded by love and support.
  8. When you are ready, extinguish the candle and thank the universe for its guidance.

As we journey through this month of awareness, let us remember that healing is a process, not a destination. There will be good days and bad days, and that’s okay. Be patient and kind to yourself, and draw strength from the natural world and the loving community around you.

Blessed be,

Moonzie 🌙

To accompany today’s reflection on healing and resilience, I suggest the soul-stirring anthem “Rise Up” by Andra Day.

While there are many beautiful new tracks trending this spring, this classic remains a powerful, mainstream touchstone for anyone navigating deep emotional waters. Its lyrics—“I’ll rise up, I’ll rise like the day, I’ll rise up, I’ll rise unafraid”—perfectly mirror the energy of the Goddess and the cycle of the moon we discussed in our post. It is a song about moving through the heaviness of the past to find the strength to stand once more.

Whether you are journaling in your sacred space or simply need a reminder of your own inner fire, let this melody be the wind beneath your wings today.
