International Asteroid Day is an annual event observed on June 30th to raise awareness about asteroids and the potential threats they pose to our planet. The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the largest asteroid impact in recorded history, which occurred on June 30, 1908, in Tunguska, Siberia, Russia.
The main objective of International Asteroid Day is to promote education and public awareness about asteroids, their nature, and their potential impact hazards. It also serves as a platform for scientists, researchers, astronauts, and experts to share their knowledge and discuss the latest discoveries and developments related to asteroids.
The event was co-founded by astrophysicist and musician Dr. Brian May, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grig Richters, and Danica Remy, the president of B612 Foundation. It was officially launched on June 30, 2015, and has gained increasing global recognition and participation since then.
On International Asteroid Day, various activities are organized worldwide, including public lectures, exhibitions, workshops, stargazing events, and educational programs. These events aim to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in learning more about asteroids, their characteristics, and the ongoing efforts to detect, track, and mitigate potential asteroid impacts on Earth.
International Asteroid Day has played a significant role in raising awareness about the importance of planetary defense and the need for increased scientific research, space missions, and international cooperation in addressing the potential threat of asteroid impacts.
